Clogau Gold
The Clogau story
For nearly 20 years, Clogau has been producing the finest jewellery, containing a touch of rare Welsh gold. Born quite accidentally, due to a
series of events, Clogau is today a one-of-a-kind jewellery brand recognised for its originality, beauty and utmost quality.
Extraordinary Gold
In 1989, the Clogau St. David's gold mine was founded by William Roberts.William wished to re-open the mine as a tourist attraction, an idea that was
overturned by the Snowdonia National Park. As a result, William decided to gamble on the idea that there would be more gold within the mine. Luckily,
there was, and a few years worth of small scale mining began in 1992 where precious rose-coloured gold began to be extracted. To make best-use of this
magnificent gold, William decided to use it to produce jewellery of the utmost beauty and quality, using Wales as the sole design inspiration. To begin with
just 5 lines of jewellery were created. And so in 1992, Clogau was born. A number of contributing factors led to the closure of the mine in 1998. With no
gold mining taking place in Wales today, Welsh gold supplies will eventually run out, making it possibly the rarest gold in the world. Due to the scarcity of
Welsh gold, only a touch is included within each piece of Clogau. This ensures the longevity of Welsh gold supplies, and the affordability of the jewellery.
The Gold of Royalty
Welsh gold is so precious that it has been used by Royalty since 1911. Clogau includes a touch of this very same gold within each piece of its
jewellery, creating an esteemed association with the British Royal Family.
Clogau today
Clogau has moved on since 1989, from a team of 3 employees (who were also miners), to now employing around 50 people to operate its North Wales
head office. William’s son, Ben, became Managing Director of Clogau in 2007:
“It never fails to amaze me when I think back to the early days of Clogau, nearly 20 years ago. I was a young boy but I can remember my father
being hugely excited about a gold mine he had discovered in the wild Snowdonia mountains. I didn’t quite understand what all the fuss was
about at the time but as I grew up I would always be inspired by his passion and dedication. As the story of Clogau continues to unfold there's one thing
that will always remain - our dedication and love for permanently capturing this beautiful Welsh gold in the most unique pieces of
jewellery. That's what Clogau is all about." says Ben.
